Priorities: Arkansas eviction notices double from last year

Another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Renters. Specifically Arkansas renters.

According to a story published Friday by KATV-Little Rock, court records show that double the eviction notices were filed in August and September compared with last year.

Unemployment because of the coronavirus outbreak is the key factor. Thousands in the state are jobless. And many are waiting for some action in Washington to send more relief their way.

It's important to note that a September order from the U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention means most tenants won't actually be evicted until after January 1, 2021 - provided they have met certain qualifications, including a notice to their landlord that they have lost income or owe significant medical expenses and they have tried to get assistance or make some payment.

It's doubtful all Arkansas renters have done so. And even those who have fulfilled the conditions still have the notice hanging over their heads - as well as the requirement that back rent must be repaid by the new year.

Landlords have expenses and need their rent money. It's unreasonable to expect them to do without that income indefinitely. And renters need some way to pay that rent.

The state stepped in with help last month, but funds are limited and only cover 2 1/2 months rent.

In the meantime, Democrats and Republicans in Congress, as well as President Donald Trump, have been making politics more important than helping those in need with another stimulus package. Every time it looks like they might reach a deal, one side or the other nixes it.

All we can say is they should get their priorities in order.
