IN OUR VIEW | Looking Up: Adding flights to Houston would be good for airport, city

Things are looking up at Texarkana Regional Airport.

Construction on the new $34 million terminal facility is under way, which will give passengers a better overall traveling experience.

And it looks like they will have another destination option as well.

Thanks to a $884,722 grant, the airport may add twice-daily direct flights to Houston's George Bush International Airport through United Airlines partner SkyWest Air.

Right now, Texarkana passengers can fly via American Airlines to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where they can pick up connecting flights to destinations worldwide. The addition of Houston would give tourist and business travelers more connecting flight to choose from.

And it would make Texarkana more easily accessible for travelers from Houston and places that connect there, too.

With any luck, increased destination options will bring more economic investment to our area.

This won't happen overnight. United Airlines has a five-year window for the grant, which will help cover start-up costs and guarantee revenue.

But we see a great potential here. And we look forward to better things to come at the Texarkana Regional Airport.
