IN OUR VIEW | Larry Elder: Popular columnist taking a break for a new venture

Regular readers of this page will notice a change to Monday's lineup of columnists.

Larry Elder, whose column has appeared here for several years, has taken a leave from journalism to embark on an ambitious new venture.

He's running for governor of California.

Elder, 69, is a popular conservative writer and radio host. He's facing an uphill battle.

Running as a Republican in Democratic-leaning California doesn't offer much hope. Voters there haven't elected a Republican to statewide office since 2006.

And he's coming into the recall-election race to unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom fairly late in the game. The election is Sept. 14, just a couple of months away.

Elder also faces an sizable field of GOP rivals, including another candidate with more name recognition than political experience - Caitlyn Jenner.

But never say never. Elder's radio show, column and social media presence mean he has a lot of sway with conservatives. And you can bet they will turn out on election day for the chance to oust Democrat Newsom.

But will they turn out for Elder and not some other candidate? That remains to be seen. If so, we won't be seeing his column for quite some time. If not, then you can find his column on this page as soon as he resumes writing.
