IN OUR VIEW | High on the List: Texas among worst states for drunken driving

Texans have a lot to be proud of.

And a few things not so much.

One is the propensity of the state's drivers to get behind the wheel after having a few too many adult beverages.

That puts Texas near the top in the nation for drunken driving - and for alcohol-related traffic fatalities.

KPRC, the NBC affiliate in Houston, reported Sunday that an insurance study ranked the Lone Star State No. 4 on the list of worst states for drunken driving.

Mississippi came in at No. 1, with South Carolina and New Mexico following.

It's nothing to be proud of. And something every Texan needs to think about before having a few drinks and driving home. The legal penalties are bad enough. But the prospect of injuring someone - or worse?

By the way, in case residents on the other side of the state line are feeling a bit smug at this news, be aware Arkansas made the list, too - at No. 7.
