Monument

By definition, compromise denies complete satisfaction to all parties. Regardless, I suggest a compromise for Texarkana's Confederate monument: (1) leave it in place; (2) install an accompanying plaque or monument worded as, or similar to the following.

Some see this monument as commemorating Confederate sacrifice and courage, as was recognized at Appomattox by Union General Joshua Chamberlain. Others see it as a shrine to hatred and oppression, first grounded in slavery, later in custom and unconstitutional laws. In any case, this monument is a relic rooted in an indelible part of our national history: the Civil War, which ultimately and rightly resulted in emancipation of the enslaved.

I leave action - or inaction - on this suggestion to others. And I have no intention of participating in any debate whatsoever. Nevertheless, I acknowledge the absolute right of your readers to endorse me or condemn me, as they see fit.
