NFL solution

TO THE EDITOR:

The NFL seems to be making a seemingly simple problem overly complicated. Maybe I'm missing something, but the most obvious solution for the on-side kick-off problem of a low percentage of success for the kicking team would appear to be to simply shorten the distance the ball has to travel before the kicking team is allowed to recover the ball.

Whatever number of yards they choose (5, 6, 7, 8?), they could include the option to adjust the number during the course of the season until the desired average percentage of success is achieved. They could give a 2-week notice before each tweak so that coaches would have a chance to make adjustments in practices. The shorter distance would restore the ability of the kicking team to get to the ball quicker, but without the greater danger of injuries caused by the running start higher speeds. The distance between opposing teams (lines of scrimmage) would also need to be adjusted accordingly.

What to do?

TO THE EDITOR:

My household is divided over your change to electronically publishing the paper. My wife loves it since she can read it more easily than the printed version. However, two of our family, Molly and Maggie, will be quite distressed when the paper copy ceases as I am sure you know that cats love newspaper. Where will they sit? What will they chew on? How will they "help" me with the puzzles? Hopefully we will all adapt without too much trauma.
