You may have overlooked it. And, we have to say, that's understandable.

But there is a chance to go to the polls today in Bowie County. It's the Democratic Party runoff election.

Now, while other parts of the state have regional contested races, that's not the case here. There are only a couple of races. One will choose the Democratic nominee for U.S. senator — the winner will face incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in November — and the other is to select the party's nominee for state land commissioner.

So it's easy to see why some may have overlooked the runoff. Bowie County's shift over the years from Democratic to Republican likely contributed to that as well.

Still, it's an election. It may not seem like a big deal, but every chance we have to go to the polls is an important moment for citizens. The way we  make our voices heard, our opinions known.

And our republic works best when all eligible citizens participate.
