Hard to believe it, but some who are fortunate enough to survive cancer still can't or won't give up smoking.

For most of us, just the thought of cancer is enough to make us avoid tobacco. And we can't imagine those who smoke and have managed to dodge the deadly bullet would go back to their dangerous habit.

But many of them do. Maybe they think they are doomed already, so why not enjoy the time they have left any way they want?

Well, they should read the story on Page 5A in today's paper.

New research shows it's never too late to reap the benefits from giving up smoking. It helps the healthy stay so, it helps with recovery after cancer treatment and it gives patients more years of life compared to those who continue puffing away.

A cancer diagnosis would be at the top of most folk's idea of bad news. Well, putting down the cigarettes is good news no matter what stage of life you are at, no matter if you have had cancer or not, no matter how bad your particular cancer might have been.

But let's be real. This most recent research is only confirming what everybody already knows. If only every smoker would act on that knowledge.
