In Our View/Tradition Returns: Four States Fair and Rodeo kicks off Friday

You can almost hear the music and smell the food if a bit later than usual
After the delays of COVID-29, it's just about time to get out your jeans and cowboy boots as the Four State Fair and Rodeo kicks off Friday. Workers are already setting up the Midway at the fairgrounds and the good times last through April 11.
Despite precautions surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, this year's Texarkana favorite promises to still be a lot of fun for young and old.
Part of that fun is the midway. Wagner Carnival is again bringing in dozens of rides, in addition to challenging games where one can win a stuffed animal or some other keepsake. The midway opens weekdays at 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday gates open at 10 a.m. (The fairgrounds will be closed to the general public on Tuesday, April 6.)
On tap from day one are the many types of "fair food" available. Many patrons hit the fair just to sample the offerings from the church and civic groups, as well as professional vendors.
There are also numerous art and craft exhibits, as well as the popular petting zoo and livestock area.
Saturday night will feature the always-popular demolition derby. And come Thursday, April 8, the PRCA Rodeo will get underway. Fans can enjoy bull and calf roping, steer wrestling, bareback and saddle bronc riding and women's barrel racing, among other events, as well as the antics of the rodeo clowns through Saturday.
The Four States Fair and Rodeo has been a part of our community since 1945. For many families going to the fair is a family tradition. Residents who attended the fair as kids in those first years are now bring their grandchildren. It's a bit of history, alive and well right here in Texarkana.
