TEXARKANA, Texas — Texarkana slugged, but Amarillo slugged harder.
The Twins fell to the Sod Dogs, 12-5, in Game 3 of a 3-game series on Thursday in a Texas Collegiate League baseball game at George Dobson Field.
Amarillo banged out 13 hits, while Texarkana had 11. The Sod Dogs were able to string together more timely hits.
Down 10-1 in the eighth with two outs, the Twins (0-3) put three runs on the board to inch closer, 10-4. Jake Slunder singled to right field and Cameron Dollar followed with a single up the middle for Texarkana.
Tyler Trovinger doubled to left as Slunder scored. Charlie Welch smacked a 2-run singled down the left field line to make it a 6-run game.
Texarkana native and former Pleasant Grove standout Seth Hopkins singled, moved up two bases on a double by Slunder and scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning to make it 12-5.
Eduardo Acosta laced in a 2-run single to give Amarillo (3-0) an early lead in the third frame.
Acosta did more damage in the fourth with a pair of RBI on a single to make it 4-0. Mathew Garcia hit an RBI single to increase the lead, 5-0.
Slunder singled up the middle, moved up on Dollar's double and scored on a wild pitch to put the Twins on the board, 5-1, in the bottom of the fourth.
Amarillo walked with the bases loaded to take a 6-1 edge in the fifth.
Reed Spenrath singled up the middle and stole second base in the fifth inning. Sod Dogs pitcher Antoine Valerio struck out the side to get out of the frame.
Amarillo put up three runs in the sixth on a 2-run single by Jake Anderson and a sacrifice fly by Mack Chambers. The runs gave the Sod Dogs a 7-run lead, 8-1.
The Sod Dogs tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to take a 12-2 lead.
Mathew Orozco was the winning pitcher, threw four innings, struck out four, did not walk a batter, allowed a run on four hits and hit a batter.
Ty Hoeker took the loss, tossed three frames, struck out six, allowed two runs on four hits and walked four.
Amarillo left 14 on base, while Texarkana stranded nine. This was the third game in a 3-game series.
The Twins take on the Tulsa Drillers at 7:05 p.m. today at George Dobson Field.
