Hooks still undefeated

HOOKS, Texas - Hooks remains undefeated, stinging Mount Vernon, 31-14, in a District 7-3A Div. I football matchup Friday night at Hornet Stadium.

The Hornets (7-1, 4-0) dominated the second half, scoring 10 points and allowing none. The Tigers slip to 6-2, 2-2.

Davarious Clark dashed 21 yards to score Hooks' final touchdown at the end of the third quarter and it was Matthew Hays who had the final word with a 22-yard field goal in the middle of the final period.

Clark ignited the Hornets with 207 yards rushing and two TDs on 28 carries. Hooks' quarterback Mason Vasquez was not far behind with 146 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries.

Weather was a definite factor in the contest that forced both teams to opt for the run. Between both teams there were only five completed passes in the first half and three more in the second half, for a total of 112 yards.

The Tigers struggled to get in front of the chains and were pulled back constantly by penalties.

Mount Vernon managed to make it into the red zone on its first drive of the second half but in the end a pass in the end zone was picked off by the Hornet defense.

The Hornets led by seven going into the half, 21-14.

Vasquez was the first to score for Hooks, breaking the seal in the opening quarter with a 3-yard keeper up the middle.

Mount Vernon ran a Wildcat offense throughout the contest with Jackson Floyd and Clifton Holloman taking turns under center.

Floyd scored the Tigers' first touchdown, a 1-yard punch, at the end of the first quarter to knot the game at 7.

On the second play of the following drive, Clark broke through the secondary, scampering 32 yards to sting for the Hornets; 13-7, after the missed kick.

Holloman retaliated for Mount Vernon at the top of the second frame with a 5-yard touchdown run for the knot at 13, and Adrian Diaz kicked it through the uprights to tip the scale in favor of the Tigers, 14-13.

Floyd led Mount Vernon with 13 carries for 102 yards and a TD. Holloman followed with 16 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown as well.

The Hornets' final drive of the first half went 14 plays, 85 yards, lasted 5:03, and culminated with a 25-yard pass caught by Benji Johnson from Vasquez.

Hooks is back in action on Friday, traveling to Jefferson at 7:30 p.m.
