DeKalb nips Hooks in playoff for 4th

NEW BOSTON, Texas - DeKalb and Hooks split their two regular season games and ended up in a two-way tie for fourth place in District 14-3A, both having 5-7 league records.

That tie forced a one-game playoff at a neutral site, and the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Hornets by two points in the fourth quarter to post a 49-47 victory Friday night.

Emily Barrett led DeKalb with 11 points and Coriana Fulbright added 10. Lindra Burchette topped Hooks with 18 points and Alley Jefferson had 13.

DeKalb opens the state playoffs against District 13-3A champion Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill at 7 p.m. Monday at Paris High School's gymnasium.

District 14-3A's other playoffs teams are first-place New Boston, runner-up Paul Pewitt and third-place Atlanta. The state playoffs open on Monday.

 

Fouke 60, Ashdown 51

ASHDOWN, Ark. - Taylor Hardin poured in 34 points to lead the Lady Panthers to a 60-51 win over the Lady Panthers in Conference 7-3A action.

Mallory Oliver added 10 points for Fouke (19-6), which bombed in 10 3-pointers. Ashdown got 12 points from Jukarra Greenlee and 11 each from Porsha Randle and Vonee Thomas.

The 7-3A tournament opens Monday at Prescott. Fouke will face the winner of the Genoa Central-Smackover game at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday. The tournament continues until the finals on Saturday.

 

Boys

McLeod 49, Linden-Kildare 43

LINDEN, Texas - McLeod, ranked No. 8 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, ran its record to 30-2 overall and 11-0 in District 15-2A with a 49-43 win over Linden-Kildare on the Tigers' home court.

The Longhorns, who led 24-22 at halftime, were led by Keldyn Schubert with 20 points, six rebounds, 10 assists and four steals. Trevor Deel added 17 points and Casey Smith nine points, including a pair of treys.

Chase Bynum topped Linden-Kildare (17-9, 5-6) with 14 points and Red Tyson contributed 10.

McLeod also won the junior varsity game, 38-28, with Mason Teer leading the winners with 16 points. L-K got 10 points from Nance Russel.

Tennis

Tigers perform well

CORSICANA, Texas - Texas High's varsity tennis team had an "awesome showing" in the Mertz Invitational tennis tournament at Corsicana High, according to Tiger coach Toby Watson.

It was the most successful tournament for the team this spring, Watson noted. "The players displayed a lot of heart and fight and are continuing to get better."

The team will travel to Kaufman next Friday.
