Spring Hill shocks Lady Hawks in playoff match

PITTSBURG, Texas - Spring Hill upset Pleasant Grove, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-12 in a Class 4A, Region II bi-district playoff volleyball match at Jack Arnwine Gym on Thursday.

The Lady Hawks end their season at 16-5, while the Pantherettes advance to the area round next week.

"We made too many errors and played tight," Pleasant Grove head coach Amy Collvins said. "Spring Hill played a smart, good game and that is what it took to beat us."

Spring Hill started off the final set up 1-0 and kept a lead throughout. At two different times, the Panthrettes held 4-point leads at 10-6 and 14-10. A Spring Hill kill ended the set.

Pleasant Grove faced a win-or-go-home situation in the fourth set with the Pantherettes up two sets to one.

Ella Nichols took the serve with the Hawks up 11-7. Nichols served in three straight to give PG a 14-7 edge. During the rally, Hallie Lipham had a kill and a tip that went for a winner.

Katie Ferguson's kill down the back baseline gave the Hawks a commanding 20-11 lead later in the set. Ferguson served in three consecutive to make it a 10-point game, 24-14. A Pantherette hitting error gave PG the win.

The third set featured five ties at 1, 7, 8, 13 and 15-all. Spring Hill scored four points in a row to take a 19-15 lead. The Hawks fought back but were unable to string points together. The Pantherettes scored four consecutive to win the set.

Lipham put a kill down the right baseline to tie the second set at 21-all. The set was only knotted three times at 1, 4 and 21. Spring Hill controlled the lead until Lipham's kill gave the Hawks the serve back, and a Ferguson tip finally gave Pleasant Grove a 22-21 edge.

Harleigh O'Neal made a block and Spring Hill had a hitting error to give the Hawks a 24-21 lead. The set ended on a booming O'Neal kill.

Errors played a big part in the first set as Pleasant Grove had double the errors of Spring Hill, 18-9. The set was knotted nine different times at 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12, 15, 16 and 17-all.

O'Neal had a block for the Hawks to tie the set at 16-all. But the Pantherettes scored six consecutive to take a 22-17 lead. PG strung together three points twice in the set, the most it had in a row.
