Garrison sweeps playoff series with McLeod

MARSHALL, Texas - Garrison shut out McLeod in a doubleheader, 2-0 12-0, in a Class 2A, Region III regional semifinal, best-of-three series on Thursday at Marshall High School's Maverick Field.

Dayton Dewberry, starting Bulldogs' pitcher in Game 2, had an outstanding outing as he tossed six innings, earned the win, struck out 14, gave up two hits and walked one.

Game 2

Garrison 12, McLeod 0

Brennan Penny and Braden Parker, who each had a single, had the only hits off Dewberry for the Longhorns. Casey Smith smacked a double to right-center in the sixth frame off of Bulldog reliever Alex Slowikowski.

McLeod starting pitcher Penny tossed 4 2-3 innings, took the loss, gave up nine runs on six hits, walked five and struck out two. The Longhorns'

Penny gave up four runs on three hits and walked three in the second as Garrison grabbed a 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs scored a run after a triple and a sacrifice fly RBI to pad their lead, 5-0, in the third. Garrison plated four runs in the sixth to take a 9-0 edge.

In the sixth, the Bulldogs increased their advantage, 12-0, on three hits and a walk.

Game 1

Garrison 2, McLeod 0

In a pitchers' dual, Bulldog starting pitcher Spivey, threw a complete game shutout, earned the win, struck out eight, gave up four hits and did not issue a walk.

Longhorn starter Kannon Dempsey tossed six innings, absorbed the loss, gave up two runs -both scored in the first inning - on six hits, struck out three and walked five.

Penny singled to right and moved up to second on an error for McLeod with two outs in the first frame. Garrison put up two runs in the first on three hits to take an early lead.

Hagan Courtney led off the Longhorns' half of the second with a single to left. A batter later, Mason Teer reached on an error to put two on with an out. Braden Parker's sacrifice bunt moved Courtney to third and Mason Teer to second, but the runners were left stranded.

Smith hit an infield single for McLeod in the third, moved up to second on a passed ball and landed on third after a fielder's choice. The Longhorns were not able to drive Smith in as the Bulldogs got out of the jam.

Courtney had a bunt single for the Longhorns to lead off the fourth, but McLeod failed to advance him on the bases.
