NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Turnovers dictated the story of the game.

Pleasant Grove turned the ball over six times and fell to Silsbee, 30-20, at Nacogdoches High School's Dragon Stadium in a varsity football game on Friday.

"We don't have guys playing as hard as they can right now; that's the biggest thing," Hawks head coach Josh Gibson said. "We took a step in the second half, especially on defense, in doing that. We have to play harder and with more belief."

Silsbee went into the locker room with a 21-7 lead. Pleasant Grove's Jaylen Boardley, who finished with 116 yards on 18 carries, scored on a 2-yard plunge with 5:16 to go until halftime.

Hawks freshman quarterback Jarret Halter threw for 97 yards on 4-of-10 passing with a TD and four interceptions. Pleasant Grove also lost possession twice with two fumbles.

"We didn't play good in the first half, but we played a really good second half," Gibson said.

Pleasant Grove outscored the Tigers, 13-9, in the second half. The Hawks had to deal with standout senior running back Marquis Dodd, who rushed for a game-high 288 yards on 33 totes and a score.

Colin Manning had an interception and returned it 18 yards for PG in the first quarter. BJ Rayfield recovered a fumble for the Hawks in the first quarter.

Silsbee quarterback Mason Brisbane threw for 55 yards on 5-of-10 passing with a touchdown and an interception.

Kevin Martin blazed into the end zone on a 31-yard rush to put the Tigers up, 28-7, with 10:23 to go in the third quarter.

Jojo Bailey capped a 37-yard Pleasant Grove drive with a 9-yard run to make it 28-14 with 11:55 left in the game.

Silsbee tackled Halter in the end zone for a safety to bring the score to 30-14 with 9:16 left in the game.

Halter threw a pass to Boardley and Boardley made some spectacular moves en route to a 68-yard touchdown to bring the Hawks within 10 points, 30-20. The 2-point conversion pass failed with 4:31 left in the game.

Pleasant Grove (1-3) has a bye week and then plays at Carthage (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 1.
