Two area teams tumble
Hooks and James Bowie played tough, but both teams suffered setbacks Friday night. The Hornets battled tooth-and-nail against explosive Elysian Fields, and the teams were deadlocked 14-all at halftime.
But the District 11-3A champion Yellowjackets caught fire in the second half and wore down the Hornets, 41-20, in a 3A area matchup. Elysian Fields advances to face Paul Pewitt in the third round.
James Bowie (8-4), the District 9-2A champion, and West Sabine went down to the final buzzer, before the Tigers pulled out a 26-20 victory at Longview's Lobo Coliseum.
Trailing 18-12, the Pirates scored on a pass play, tying the score at 18-18. James Bowie then rushed for a 2-point conversion, giving the Bucs a short-lived 20-18 lead late in the contest.
West Sabine, however, scored on a pass play a few plays later, and a 2-point conversion pass also was good, giving the Tigers a 6-point win.
Daingerfield (9-3), the other playoff representative from 10-3A, was eliminated by 9-1 Waskom, 28-27, when the Tigers were stopped short on a 2-point conversion run.
Northeast Texas' other playoff team, Pleasant Grove, tackles Nevada Community at 3 p.m. today in the Star in Frisco, Texas.
