GLADEWATER, Texas — In this historic account, Goliath won.

Pleasant Grove trounced Gladewater, 45-0, at Jack V. Murphy Stadium on Friday in a non-district football game.

"It feels really, really good to earn the shutout," Pleasant Grove head coach Josh Gibson said. "We played a complete, physical, disciplined game. I am really proud of our defense."

Bruce Garrett rushed for 140 yards on 10 carries and a pair of touchdowns for the Hawks (4-0).

"It was a huge team win for us tonight," Garrett said. "I want to give credit to my offensive line and to the backs who were blocking. I run on faith, and I know that I am not always going to carry the ball for 60-plus yards on one run."

Sergio Rodriguez had a pick-six with 11:07 to go in the third to put the Hawks up 31-0.

Garrett showed off his speed on a 48-yard touchdown run as Pleasant Grove took a commanding 38-0 lead with 2:25 left in the third.

Quarterback Ben Harmon got loose on a 60-yard run to put the Hawks in business early in the fourth period.

Logan Johnson rumbled 5 yards for a TD, and PG never looked back, 45-0.

The Black Hawk defense made the Bears go 0-8 on fourth-down tries.

Shayne Nelson plunged into the end zone from a yard out for the first Hawks' score with 10:40 left in the first.

The touchdown was set up by Garrett's 56-yard scamper that took the ball down to the 5-yard line.

Landon Jackson recovered a Gladewater fumble to give Pleasant Grove the ball at the Bears' 44-yard line.

Garrett punched the ball in from the 1-yard line to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead with 6:53 in the first.

Harmon hit Marcus Burris on a route as Burris turned on the turbos and went 66 yards into the end zone. PG was up 21-0 with 4:12 to go in the first.

The second half was a nip-and-tuck affair, with each team going for it on fourth down, but coming up short. The biggest stop for the Black Hawk defense was late in the second quarter when Gladewater threatened to put points on the board.

On a 4th-and-1, PG's defense forced an incomplete pass and took over on downs.

Anthony Mejia hit a 21-yard field goal to give the Hawks a 24-0 halftime lead over the 2-2 Bears.

Pleasant Grove (4-0) plays at Tyler Chapel Hill at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
