GENOA, Ark. — The Genoa Central Dragons football program is making a mid-season surge.
Although the Dragons fell to Jessieville last week, 48-32, Genoa Central is optimistic about the rest of its Conference 5-3A slate.
"Well, we're 3-3 and everything has been going well," Genoa Central head coach Buddy Ray said. "For the most part, we've played well. We still have four regular season games left. We're just trying to get better each day.
"We're preparing each day for the rest of our season, so we can play as well as we can."
The Dragons (3-3, 1-2) face Prescott (4-0, 2-0) at Eddie Jackson Field tonight at 7 p.m.
Opponents have outscored Genoa Central 130-68 in conference competition.
"We opened conference with a win over Bismarck," Ray said. "We fell to Glen Rose and Jessieville. We have Prescott tonight and that's always a tough outing.
"We still have the closing stretch of our season, so we have to improve each day."
The Dragons' final three games are all at home. Genoa Central will host Horatio, Centerpoint and Fouke, for their annual Battle of Bridge contest.
"I think our kids have responded really well to everything that has been thrown at them this season," Ray said. "We've also been very fortunate to not be affected by it as much as some others may be. Our kids have done a great job of following the protocols and also keeping themselves safe. "
Genoa Central is led this season by many seniors. Jacob Allen, Drew Mason, Elias Gawrieh, Cole Springer and Johnny Mills will use their varsity game experience to guide the Dragons throughout the rest of their season.
"A lot of our kids have to play both ways," Ray said. "We have lower numbers this season, due to different factors but the kids are giving their all; that's all we ask of them."
