WHITEHOUSE, Texas — Seventh-ranked Huntsville had a big inning and belted five home runs to run-rule Texas High, 13-3, in Game 1 of the Class 5A bi-district series Wednesday at Whitehouse High School.
The teams have today off and will resume the series at 6 p.m. Friday back at Lady Cat Field. If the Lady Tigers (11-10) force a third game, it will be played Friday after a brief intermission.
Kylee Lehman earned the pitching win for the Lady Hornets (25-3). Lehman threw 86 pitches in five innings, allowed three runs on three hits — one a 2-run home run by Lauren Allred — struck out six, walked four and hit a batter.
In the bottom of the first, Hornet leadoff batter Kylie Grisham smashed a 2-1 offering off the scoreboard beyond the wall in left field for a solo home run to stake Huntsville to a 1-0 lead and set the tone for the game.
Only one other Hornet reached base through the lineup the first time, and Grisham came up with one out in the third, when she belted another solo homer, this one to center field to make it 2-0.
Texas High had a baserunner in each the first three frames but managed to get just one to second base on a sac bunt in the third.
Mollie Fisher led off the Tigers' fourth with a single to center, and she was bunted to second. An error put two on with one out, and the next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Olivia Huckabee worked a 5-pitch walk to earn an RBI, but a pair of pop outs prevented any more damage and stranded the bases loaded to end the inning.
Lehman singled to right-center to start the bottom of the fourth, and Hope Grant banged an RBI triple off the wall in right to regain a 2-run lead. Grant scored on Kenley Strange's single to left.
Strange stole second, advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on Grisham's hit up the middle with two outs. After an error, Jaelynn Duke doubled in a pair of runs, and Jensen Vienne ripped a 2-run homer to left for a 9-1 lead.
Following a pair of walks, a fly ball to center ended the inning. Huntsville sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, had six hits and scored seven times.
Allred smashed the first pitch she saw in the fifth over the wall in right field for a 2-run dinger for Texas High to make it 9-3. Ashanti Northcross had walked on five pitches before Allred's big fly.
Brlée Wiggins smacked a solo homer for the Hornets to start the bottom of the fifth, Kali Klawinsky singled, and Kylie Woods had a one-out hit. After a wild pitch allowed Klawinsky to score, Duke ended the game with a 2-run homer to center.
Texas High starter Liz Smith took the loss and pitched 2 1-3 innings. Huckabee pitched the final two innings of relief.
