TEXARKANA, Texas — Mount Pleasant used a 12-point swing in the third quarter to open up a double-digit lead and pull away from Texas High in a boys basketball game.

MP shot 51 percent from the field and remained unbeaten with a 59-45 victory Tuesday at Tiger Center.

The visiting Tigers held the advantage in rebounds (36-30) and turnovers committed (16-21). Texas High regained an early lead just before halftime, but Mount Pleasant (13-0, 2-0) sealed the District 15-5A win in the second half.

It was the third straight loss for THS (3-3, 1-2). The host Tigers shot 34 percent on 16-of-47 field goals.

MP made 23 of 45 shots in the game.

Mount Pleasant came out strong in the second half and opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run to take a 35-26 lead. After a fast-break layup by Ben DePriest, who had nailed a 3 earlier in the period, MP closed the third with an 8-0 rally, building a 15-point lead.

The teams matched nearly point for point in the fourth quarter as Mount Pleasant protected its lead for the win.

Texas High controlled the game early, nailing a pair of 3s and grabbing leads of 7-2 and 10-6. Mount Pleasant turned the momentum, however, and scored the final 10 points of the first quarter to take a 16-10 lead into the first break.

MP scored three buckets in the last 54 seconds of the first, including a pair of fast-break dunks by Zaveion Okoh with 35 and 16 seconds remaining.

Defense dominated the first four minutes of the second quarter — each team scoring just one basket during that span. Michael Thomas swished in a 3-pointer for THS with 4:00 left in the second to start a 9-3 rally and bring Texas High within one point (22-21).

Zane Dodson scored on both ends of a one-and-one for THS to grab a 23-22 lead with 1:28 left until intermission. Mount Pleasant scored the next four points, including a trey with five ticks left until halftime.

Texas High shot 32 percent (8 of 25) in the first half, and Mount Pleasant shot 50 percent (10 of 20). MP led 26-23 at the midway point.

Thomas scored 15 points to lead THS, DePriest added eight points, and Damon Augustus and Caleb Arnold scored seven apiece. Zane Dodson pulled down seven rebounds.

Payton Chism led MP with 18 points, and Okoh had 10. Miller McCrumby and Xzavier Brown led the visitors with seven rebounds apiece.

Mount Pleasant's junior varsity posted a 51-34 win. TJ Gray scored 10 points for THS, and Colton Jackson and Jakholbe Johnson contributed nine points apiece.

MP won the freshmen game, 51-28. Jadyn Willis led Texas High with 17 points.
