Weekend fishing is looking good at Millwood Lake

TEXARKANA, Ark. - Fish activity has been picking up on Millwood Lake throughout the week.

The most common fish to catch at Millwood are bass, crappie, catfish and bream. Millwood State Park is open for campers and the marina is also open.

Largemouth bass feeding has improved in the early morning. Improved reactions to Baby Torpedoes, Assassin Shads, frogs, Bass Assassin Shads, Buzzbaits and Spit'n Images have been observed. If fishing around pads and grass lines, spinnerbaits are working well.

Square-bill crankbaits, medium-running Echo 1.5 crankbaits, Bill Norman Deep Little N's and custom painted Little John Crankbaits have increased improvement so far this week. Largemouths have been busting topwter baits early in the creek channels near the golf course pockets between South Hickory and Millwood State Park.

When using crankbait, Millwood Magic, Citrus Shad, Tennesee Shad and Splatterback have been the most productive colors. Frogs and Bass Assassin Shad are best used in 4-8 feet of water around bushes, flooded buckbrush and cypress trees where water is rising.

Houdini, pupkinseed and salt-n-pepper silver phantom have been the best colors to use when fishing with Bass Assassin Shad. Power Worms (10 inch) and Baby Brush Hogs have been fair. Firetiger color in stained water or spot remover for clear water are the recommended spinnerbait colors. Spinnerbaits and chatterbaits have been improving throughout the week.

Crappie have been spawning in shallow waters, and jigs and minnows have been working away from the current and flow of the Little River. The recommended colors for jigs are chartreuse (white), chartreuse (blue) and black.

Bream have been hitting well on minnows and worms at Yarborough Landing, the floating dock at Jack's Isle and the banks around Millwood State Park.

The increased current of the Little River has helped improve the catfishing. Blues and channel cats on trotlines have hit on Punch Baits, chicken livers, cut shad and buffalo and blood baits.
