Magee, Granger shoot 73 to take lead

TEXARKANA, Ark. - The team of Debbie Magee and Lillian Granger took a 2-stroke lead during the opening round of the 52nd Annual Twice As Nice Women's Invitational Wednesday at Texarkana Country Club.

Magee and Granger were 2-over par after the front 9 holes in the best-ball format round, and Magee birdied No. 17 to finish the round at 1-over-par 73.

Valerie Comerly and Debbie LeBlanc turned in a 3-over 75 to move into second place in the championship flight of the Twice As Nice.

There are three teams tied at 78 and another at 79 heading into today's final round, which will be a scramble format. The field of 58 teams tees off at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start today at TCC.

Tied for third at 78 are the teams of Kay Crumpton and Nancy Palazzetti - the defending champions of the tournament - Janie Caldwell and Debbie Youngman, and Alice Schwing-Smith and Gail LaGrange.

Locals Vicki DeLaughter and Teresa Horn are in sixth place with a 79, and the team of Pat Schultz and Teri Bacon is tied for seventh at 80 with the duo of Gina O'Neal and Sandy Renner.

In the First Flight, Cheryl Boutte and Carla Thompson shot a 4-over 76 to take a 4-shot lead in their flight.

Terrie Hefner and Jan Gilmore are in second in the First Flight with an 80, and the teams of Mary Ann Knipe and Judy Brady, and Carol Bishop and Paula Vinzetta are tied for third in the flight at 82.

The Second Flight is led by Pat Walters and Peggy Neal with their 82. Three teams are two shots back at 84: Joyce Middleton and Robbie Gainne, Beth Mason and Bridgett Norwood, and Frieda Sims and Elaine Flanagan.

In the Third Flight, Brenda Hobbs and Pat Grimes lead the way with an 86, and Freida Brainerd and Stephanie Wright are in second with a first-round 88.
