Pete Simpson claims senior golf championship

HOOKS, Texas - Pete Simpson is the 2021 Southwest Arkansas Senior Golf Association's club champion.

Simpson won the title during the club championship event on Thursday at Oak Grove Golf Club. He carded a low gross 72 in the "A" flight, and Ronnie Ingram was second low gross with a 74.

Jerry Burnett had a low net of 61 to win the "A" flight and Dennis Simpson was second low net with a 63.

Kelly Scott had the low gross in the "B" flight with an 80 and John Warren was runner-up with an 81. Jim Gentry had low net in "B" flight with a 64 and Waylon Leeper was second low net with a 67.

In the "C" flight, low net was won by Ron Brown 77 and Jimmy Hughes 86. The low net winners were Eddie Hughes 78 and Jimmy Hughes 91.

A total of 63 golfers competed in the club championship, which was a gross and net stroke play tournament. Ties were broken starting with hole No. 7.

The SWASGA's next event will be a 4-man scramble Oct. 21 at DeGray Lake Resort State Park golf course in Bismarck, Ark.

Subvarsity

TMS wins 3 of 4

TEXARKANA, Texas - Texas Middle School won 3-out-of-4 volleyball matches against Mount Pleasant Thursday in the Tiger Center.

In the eighth grade "A" match, TMS won, 25-7, 25-17, with Adalyn Vazquez serving 19 points for the victors.

MP won two of three games to take the eighth grade "B'" match, 26-24, 23-25, 15-8. Kortlyn Estell served 19 points for the hosts.

TMS lost the first game, 25-20, but came back to win the next two and the match, 27-25, 25-12. The winners were powered by Rayya Brown with 23 points and Cara Williams added 12.

In the seventh grade "B" match, the hosts won in straight sets, 25-9, 25-19. De'Myjae Atkins led TMS with 12 points.

Arkansas side triumphs

TEXARKANA, Ark. - Arkansas Middle School defeated Hot Springs Lakewide, 25-20, 25-22.

The winners were led by Aniya Arnold with seven points, and Addison Girley and Jordan Collier added five points.

Cross Country

Dragons compete in meet

CUMBY, Texas - Redwater competed Thursday in the Miller Grove ISD Cross Country meet on the high school course.

In the 114-member varsity girls division, the Dragons' Landy Canto was 18th (14:31) and Gracie McCoy was 53rd (16:09). It was the best times of the season for both individuals.

In the 146-member varsity boys group, Redwater's Kilin Kennedy was 70th in 21:18; Cameron Wallace was 116th in 23:18; and Brady Whitman 124th in 24:22.
