Ashdown teacher receives AAMLE grant

Ashdown teacher Tom Simmons received a grant that will provide engaging resources to further hands-on learning for students.

The Arkansas Association of Middle Level Education awarded Simmons, a seventh-grade math teacher, with one of four grants that will provide math manipulatives and resources that will help students develop a deep conceptual understanding of statistical analysis and geometric principles.

Students are expected to better understand this material with a hands-on approach, which is what the grant will bring forth.

These resources will be made available to students in grades 6-8 in all of their math classes.

As one of the recipients of an AAMLE grant, Simmons will have the opportunity to share the success from this grant with other middle-level teachers from across the state at the 2021 AAMLE Spring Conference as a presenter.

In a press release from the Ashdown School District, Simmons expressed his excitement to implement the newfound resources into his curriculum.

"I'm really looking forward to the upcoming school year and getting to work with the team at AJHS," Simmons said. "This grant will provide even more opportunities for students to learn the mathematics through entertaining explorations."
