Habitat for Humanity gets $10,000 for Redwater effort

REDWATER, Texas - Habitat for Humanity recently received $10,000 from the National Catholic Daughters of America, during a check presentation here earlier this month.

The Texarkana-based HFH office is about to continue construction on its most recent 1,100 square-foot project in this town, located about 13 miles east of Texarkana on U.S. Highway 67.

Melodie Brunt, Texas CDA state regent, said member of CDA's Texas chapter delivered the $10,000 check to HFH officials during a ceremony at the future home's site on the morning of Nov. 21.

That Saturday morning, members of the Greater Texarkana Young Professionals, along with members of the Knights of Columbus, conducted a team effort to raise the house walls.

"Monies are needed to buy building materials as well as pay for labor to complete electrical and plumbing installations, " Brunt said. "We invite churches and community members to help us continue raising funds to finish the house."

Local HFH Board Chairman Carol Giese said in a prepared statement that "the advice we keep hearing over and over again is to stay safe, stay healthy and stay home. Yet being healthy and safe at home isn't yet a possibility for many of our Texarkana neighbors - and the pathway to healthy, affordable and stable home-ownership isn't yet a level playing field."

HFH Executive Director Mary Wormington said the home's concrete slab foundation has already been poured and that work on the frame will continue as the weather improves. The home's official groundbreaking took place in February.
