Sevier County residents will vote on alcohol sales

De QUEEN, Ark. - Sevier County residents will be able to vote for or against alcohol sales this November.

Volunteers gathered more than 2,700 petition signatures from registered Sevier County voters in order to get the issue on the ballot, according to the Sevier County Clerk's office.

In order for the item to be put on the ballot, at least 38% - or 2,573 - of Sevier County's more than 17,000 registered voters had to sign the petition.

If the ballot issue passes, Sevier County restaurants will be able to apply for licenses to serve alcohol and three liquor stores would be allowed to open in the county. In Arkansas, the population of an area determines the number of liquor stores allowed in each county.

The group Vote for Growth, comprised of about 30 business owners in Sevier County, circulated the petition with hopes of promoting economic development.

The general election is Nov.3.
