Commissioners looking at generators for courthouse

NEW BOSTON, Texas - Bowie County Commissioners agreed Monday to continue contracting with Harrison County to allow that county to keep providing juvenile detention center services for another year.

Court members agreed to have Bowie County Judge Bobby Howell continue an agreement with Harrison County to provide both pre-adjudication and post-adjudication detention space for the upcoming 2022 Fiscal Year.

Up until about 2012, Bowie County had a juvenile detention center on West Seventh Street until it became cost prohibitive to operate.

Court members also agreed to table two bids for a courthouse generator to allow for more study. The first bid for a diesel generator, came in at $239,649, the second for a natural gas generator came in at $257,175.

In other business, the court agreed to re-appoint county resident Jami Duran to serve another two-year term on the Community Healthcore Board of Trustees. Her new term will start Sept. 1 and conclude Aug. 31.

During the meeting's public comment portion, New Boston Mayor Ronald Humphrey spoke to commissioners regarding animal control issues specifically pertaining to people abandoning their animals beside roadways.

Humphrey requested a possible joint meeting between commissioners and county mayors regarding animal control measures needed to curb the stray animal population.

Howell said he was a aware of the problem and added that the county may be able to arrange for a joint meeting later in the year.
