Investigators searching for two people with possible information on murder

Texarkana, Texas, Police Department is seeking two persons of interest in the Aug. 24 slaying of a man at a West Seventh Street apartment complex.

Sgt. Steve Shelley said investigators are looking for Alana Leigh Coleman, 30, and Daniel Cruz, 26, of Texarkana, Texas. Shelley said the two "may have information pertaining to the latest homicide in the city," which is the death of 63-year-old Donald Ray Morris.

Coleman has a last known address on Connella Street and is wanted on warrants of aggravated robbery and a probation violation for possession of a controlled substance, Shelley said. He said those warrants are for incidents prior to Morris' death.

Shelley described Coleman and Cruz as acquaintances of Morris and said the two persons of interest are believed to be traveling together, with Coleman known to drive a black 1999 Ford Explorer with Arkansas license plate number 202 RLP.

The two may be armed, Shelley said.

Morris was found dead and covered in blood approximately 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 in his unit at Redwood Apartments, 3404 W. Seventh St. The complex manager reported finding Morris, whose body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy.

As of Friday, Shelley said autopsy results were not yet available, including a cause of death. Investigators think some sort of unspecified disturbance occurred inside Morris' apartment the night he was killed.

Another tenant said he was sitting on a bench outside Morris' apartment, No. 22, when he heard a commotion and then saw "some big, old bloody hand" open the door from inside No. 22. The neighbor, Billy Jones, said he ran back to his apartment and did not call authorities because "you don't call 911 around here."

The slaying was the Texas side's third homicide of 2012.

Shelley said anyone who sees Coleman or Cruz should not approach them but call 911 or Texarkana Area Crime Stoppers at 903-793-STOP.
