Texarkana, Texas, Police Department is investigating Sunday night's accidental shooting of a 12-year-old boy by his 9-year-old bother at their residence, an official said.

The victim is in stable condition and his injuries are not considered life threatening.

Officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting in the 300 block of Breckenridge Street at 10:09 p.m. Sunday, said Shawn Vaughn, TTPD spokesman.

"Upon their arrival, they found a 12-year-old boy with a single gunshot wound to his cheek. They were told that the boy's younger brother found a .380 handgun belonging to his parents in the home and was playing with it," Vaughn stated in a press release.

'The pistol accidental discharged and struck the older boy in the cheek. He indicated that he did not realize that the gun was loaded. The children's mother was home at the time but was not in the room when the shooting occurred," Vaughn wrote.

The victim was transported to CHRISTUS St. Michael by ambulance and later airlifted to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock as a precautionary measure.

Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
