Fans are still available for senior adults in need

Fans are still available for senior adults who need one.

The Ark-Tex Council of Governments/ Area Agency on Aging is continuing to collect fans for senior adults.

The annual fan drive is held in memory of late employee Vinie Reed.

"It's been going great. We have had about 200 donated and have 20 left. They have been a hot commodity," said Lisa Reeve, manager of the Area Agency on Aging.

The fans will be donated to people 60 and older who need them.

Anyone interested in donating a new fan can drop it off at the ATCOG Building at 4808 Elizabeth Street in Texarkana, Texas. Monetary donations will also be accepted and will be spent on fans.

Many older people, especially ones on a fixed income, suffer during the summer months. Some of them have central air but don't turn it on because of the cost, according to the Area Agency on Aging.

ATCOG's hours are 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Monetary donations are accepted as well.

For more information, or to receive a fan, call 903-832-8636.

The Salvation Army is also collecting fans to help the families it serves.

Seniors with low incomes are given first priority, said Salvation Army Office Manager Brenda Hogan. Anyone interested in receiving a fan should call the office at 870-774-2701 to make an appointment. They should also provide identification.

Anyone interested in donating a new or gently used fan can drop it off at the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army is located at 400 E. Fourth St., Texarkana, Ark.
