Local fire department to drop off Easter candy for children

HOOKS, Texas - Hooks firefighters will be playing Easter Bunny for local children this year.

Members of the Hooks Volunteer Fire Department will deliver Easter candy from their firetrucks starting at 2 p.m. April 12 (Easter Sunday).

Parents in the Hooks area who are interested in receiving candy for their children ages 12 or younger can go to the Hooks Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page and sign up on the link provided on the flyer, said HVFD Chief Brandon Whitehurst.

The department would like most parents to register by this Sunday, so they will have a good head count, Whitehurst said.

However, they will also have extra bags of candy just in case.

"We threw this together really quickly. Normally, there is an Easter event at the high school but of course it's been cancelled this year and the fire department just started thinking about what we could do for the kids," Whitehurst said.

He said firefighters will practice social distancing by quickly leaving one bag of candy on porches. Whitehurst said his own young children helped play a part in the event.

"Young kids don't really understand what is going on. They are not going to school so their routines are messed up and their activities are cancelled. We are just trying to do what we can for them. It's just a really odd time right now," he said.

Anyone who wants to donate candy can leave it at Hooks City Hall.
