TEXARKANA, Ark. - School board member Vickie Lacy announced Friday that she is a candidate for the Ward 2 seat on the city Board of Directors.

"After a great deal of prayer, and consideration with my husband and family, I have decided to join the race for Ward 2 Director of Texarkana. I hope to bring my experience from various organizations and join others on the Board of Directors working for a better Texarkana," she said in a news release.

Lacy is a graduate of Arkansas High School and attended Southern Arkansas University. She has been a cosmetologist for 28 years and works as a stylist at The Salon.

She has served on the Texarkana, Arkansas, School District Board of Directors since 2012 and is on the NFL Hometown Weekend Committee and the MLK Jr. Weekend Celebration Committee. She is also a member of the Graceful Women Ministry.

Lacy is also active with the Sandflat-Glendale Neighborhood Center, where she "volunteers with others to help increase resources and improve communities in the city and local area," the release stated.

She is married to Walter Lacy. The couple have four children and are active at Grace and Mercy Church of God in Christ.

Lacy will challenge incumbent Laney Harris for the Ward 2 seat in November's general election.

To appear on the ballot, candidates for the Ward 2 seat, as well as for Ward 1 and Ward 6, must submit a filing statement and a petition of nomination to the city clerk by noon Aug. 14. The petition must be signed by at least 50 people registered to vote within the city limits. Candidates also must file a statement of financial interest.

Election Day is Nov. 3.
