Texas death toll surpasses 8,000

The COVID-19 death tolls in Bowie and Cass counties in Texas on Friday increased by one each.

Bowie County reported its 39th death because of the disease, and Cass County reported its eighth, according to the local emergency Joint Operations Center. COVID-19 deaths are recorded where patients die, not where they lived.

Bowie County's cumulative number of confirmed coronavirus cases jumped by 34 from
Thursday to Friday, moving from 679 to 713. The county's case count, 619 on July 31, has increased by almost 100 over the past
week.

Two-hundred ninety-one Bowie County patients have recovered, and there are 350 active cases in the county.

Cass County's tally rose by six, from 160 to 166, with 84 recoveries and 74 active cases.

Elsewhere in Northeast Texas, Morris County's case count rose from 100 to 105, Red River County's from 136 to 137 and Titus County's from 1,184 to 1,196, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

In Southwest Arkansas, Miller County added four cases to reach 499, with 434 recoveries, five deaths and 60 active cases, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

Pike County's count went up from 91 to 97, Nevada County's from 136 to 137, Little River County's from 164 to 168, Hempstead County's from 227 to 233, Howard County's from 322 to 327 and Sevier County's from 969 to 976. Lafayette County held at 52 cases.

Caddo Parish in Northwest Louisiana added 44 cases for a total of 6,610, and Bossier Parish added 16 cases to reach 2,311, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

Statewide, Arkansas reported 48,309 cases with 521 deaths. Louisiana reported 128,746 cases with 4,089 deaths, and Texas reported 474,524 cases with 8,096 deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 4,858,596 total cases so far in the U.S., with a national death toll of 158,887.
