Local veterans' group hopes to hold Western wagons fundraiser in March

TEXARKANA, Ark. - Even though Texarkana Area Chapter 278 of the Vietnam Veterans of America wasn't able to hold the traditional annual Wagons for Veterans fundraiser this year because of COVID-19, they're going to try next year.

The local VVA is tentatively setting what will be its Third Annual Wagons for Veterans country cooking fundraiser for March 13, 2021, at the Four States Fairgrounds behind the rodeo arena, under an outdoor roof.

"This of course will still be dependent on the COVID-19 circumstance and, to be honest, it's not looking too promising so far, but we're going to try," said Greg Beck at a Sunday VVA meeting.

Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Each of the 12 to 15 wagons that usually participate offers various menu items cooked the old-fashioned way during the days of America's Old West - in cast-iron pots and skillets over an open fire - just like in the cattle drives.

The first event raised about $8,500 in proceeds, while the second brought in about $18,000. All the money goes to helping the area's veterans and disabled veterans with home repairs, utility bills, funeral expenses, school books, rent, food and medical assistance. The funds also support the local Heroes' Food Pantry, which feeds about 125 veterans and their families on a monthly basis.
