Musicians, choirs gather at TC in honor of Black History Month

TEXARKANA, Texas - At least 120 voices took part Sunday afternoon in the Soul Fest celebration of Black History Month inside Texarkana College's Truman Arnold Student Center.

The Texarkana Regional Chorale, TC students and Liberty-Eylau Varsity Choir members, along with the Texas High School Tiger Tones and the Veritas Academy Choir let their voices radiate throughout the center's Great Room on the building's second floor as hundreds packed the venue.

The event featured conductor Marc-Andre Bougie and pianist Mary Scott Goode, in addition to Liberty-Eylau High School's Varsity Choir, lead Sherri Pickering, the Texas High School's Tiger Tones directed by Jennifer Colton-Fowler and the Veritas Academy Choir lead by Stephanie House.

"Ever since I first came to Texarkana in 2006, I've been involved in Black History Month celebrations," Bougie said. "Soul music is a great mixture and blend of gospel, spiritual and classical music."

Mary Scott Goode agreed.

"I love this gathering of people of all ages and all walks of life," she said "We see great young musicians learning from more experienced musicians."

In addition to Soul Fest, the Texarkana Pan Hellenic Council of Black Fraternities and Sororities will hold a forum starting at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in Texarkana College's Levi Hall Conference Room.

The forum, which will be sponsored and presented by TC's Cultural Awareness Student Association as well as TC's Black Student Association, will focus on becoming a member of a national Greek organization.
