02/20/20 -- a six-digit palindrome -- one of the rare calendar occasions

Saturday's six-digit date format 02/22/20 should cause us to go forward and then do a reverse double take.

The date is a palindrome, which means it is the same whether read front to back or back to front.

February may be the shortest month in any year, but this year it contains two six-digit palindrome dates: today's date and the recently passed 02/11/20.

After today, six-digit palindrome dates will not recur until December 2021.

The last month of 2021 will give us two six-digit palindrome dates on Dec. 11 and Dec. 22.

When expressed in six-digit format, they are 12/11/21 and 12/22/21, respectively.

When considering eight-digit palindrome dates, this month contained one as well: 02/02/2020. Now that's seeing 2020 front to back. It was also Super Bowl Sunday and Groundhog Day.

The eight-digit palindrome date format has rarer occurrences, as this month's was the only one for this century. The next eight-digit palindrome date format, 12/12/2121, most of us will not likely live to see. After that, the next eight-digit palindrome date will be 03/03/3030.

Whether dates are expressed in six digits or eight digits, palindromes are rare and fun events.

So, don't be late.

Let's celebrate.
