Texarkana chamber president speaks to Arkansas-side city board about upcoming events

With the year still new, the Texarkana, Arkansas, City Board of Directors spent most of their Monday meeting listening to Texarkana Chamber of Commerce President Mike Malone's economic report looking at 2020.

Malone said that the Palmer Awards Ceremony will be later this month and that the chamber plans to spend time this year focusing on business retention as well as business growth.

Malone also said that he was pleased with last year's chamber radio advertisements that encouraged people to buy locally, adding that he also saw more commercial growth in the Twin Cities' downtown area. He went on to say that the chamber plans to have another trade show, but this time making sure that it will be held during cooler weather.

"We are also still working with the local school districts to help connect graduates with training programs and local businesses with job opportunities," he said.

As for next month, Malone said he is looking forward to the joint city meeting set to take place at 3 p.m., Feb. 4 at the Ark-Tex Council of Government local office, mainly because the meeting will focus on the 2020 Population Census and that there is need for serious residential participation in order to get a very accurate account of both cities' populations.

In other business, board members approved their Dec. 16 meeting minutes.
