Texas-side City Council appoints early voting election officials for special municipal race

Texarkana, Texas, City officials will have elections officials available to preside over early voting in a special municipal election to be held later this month.

Texas-side City Council members approved appointing two election officials to preside over early voting for the Jan. 28 special municipal election during a special meeting Monday.

The Jan. 28 special city election will be held to fill a council member vacancy of an unexpired term in Ward 6.

During the special meeting, council members approved appointing Texas-side resident Shirley Dansby as early voting presiding judge and Texas-side resident Gerald Brooks as early voting ballot board judge.

Initially, council members were set to vote on appointing not only early voting election officials, but also election day officials. However, Texas-side City Attorney Jeff Lewis asked the council to change the measure to allow for only the appointing of early voting election officials in order to give city officials more time to find qualified elections officials to preside over the election day voting.

Council members approved the final measure with Ward 6 Council member Josh Davis abstaining.

Council members also agreed to appoint election officials to preside over the election day voting during one of their two regular meetings set for later this month.

The Jan. 28 special municipal election will be between Jay Davis, a local banker, and local real estate agent Mike Ingram. Both are running for the seat being vacated by Josh Davis - no relation to Jay Davis. Josh Davis resigned Nov. 14 to run for Bowie County tax assessor-collector.
