No major accidents in area snow, sleet

TEXARKANA - Texarkana and surrounding counties received a light dusting of snow and sleet early Wednesday, but no major accidents or travel problems were reported.

"We had a few crashes early this morning on Jarvis Parkway but nothing major," said Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department.

There was little accumulation except for elevated surfaces. Precipitation became rain as temperatures climbed a little bit later in the morning. Temperatures had only reached 35 degrees by Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Kristi Bennett, spokeswoman for the Texarkana, Arkansas, Police Department, said there were only a few minor accidents on their side of town.

"A couple of vehicles went into the ditches about 6 a.m. when the sleet started," she said. No injuries were reported.

No major accidents were worked by the Arkansas State Police or Texas Department of Public Safety.

Widespread rain is expected to continue until late Thursday afternoon or early Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Total rainfall amounts of up to one and a half inches could be possible.

Highs should be back in the low 50s by Thursday afternoon.
