TEXARKANA — Texarkana Water Utilities is asking customers to avoid flushing items such as disinfectant wipes and paper towels down the toilet.

Sewer clogs caused by such items can exacerbate the crisis caused by the new coronavirus, a TWU news release stated.

"Nylon wipes and paper towels are stronger than toilet paper and do not break down in the same fashion. Flushing wipes, paper towels and similar products down toilets will clog sewers and cause backup and overflows at wastewater lift stations, creating an additional public health risk in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Even wipes labeled flushable will clog pipes and interfere with sewage collection," the release states.

Only toilet tissue is designed to safely break down in the sanitary sewer system without interfering with its operation.
