TDCJ: 44 Telford employees, 30 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19

NEW BOSTON, Texas  - The Texas Department of Criminal Justice reported Monday that 44 employees of the Barry Telford Unit in New Boston have tested positively for COVID-19.

The agency reported Monday that 30 inmates currently housed at Telford have tested positively, seven inmate tests are pending and 37 inmates are in medical isolation.

Medical isolation is "for people who are sick and contagious. Isolation is used to separate ill persons who have a communicable disease from those who are healthy," according to TDCJ's website.

TDCJ reported Monday that 685 inmates are currently in medical restriction.

Medical restriction is "used to separate and restrict the movement of well persons who may have been exposed to a communicable disease to see if they become ill. These people may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may have the disease but do not show symptoms," according to TDCJ.

Employees who test positively are included in the counts of infected persons in the counties where they reside. Inmates are not included in county totals.

TDCJ reported Monday that 1,275 inmates have tested positively for COVID-19 statewide with 371 recovered. TDCJ reports statewide that 22 inmate deaths are presumed to have resulted from infection with the virus and that autopsy results are pending on 12 inmates.

The agency reports statewide that 461 employees and contract staff with TDCJ have tested positively for COVID-19.
