PGISD to swear in board members today

TEXARKANA, Texas - Administering the Oath of Office to board members and considering approval of a district literacy coordinator position are among the items the Pleasant Grove Independent School District Board of Trustees are expected to consider at tonight's meeting.

Incumbent Ross Sarine, Place 4, and new board member Brandy Eldridge, Place 5, ran unopposed. They are to complete financial reports and sign the Oath of Office.

The board will also consider the approval of the position of district literacy coordinator for grades Pre-K-12, citing a focus on improving reading and writing across the district.

The coordinator will develop, implement and support a literacy program that will be consistent and aligned across all campuses, according to the agenda packet each board member receives before the meeting.

In other business, the board will look to appoint Gaye Holbrook as the new recording secretary for the Board. Holbrook is taking the long-tenured Kathie Rehkopf's place as secretary to the superintendent, as Rehkopf is retiring. Rehkopf previously was the recording secretary.

The board also will consider certifying the 2020 tax roll as provided by Bowie Central Appraisal District.

The tax roll provides the breakdown of the total tax levy to be collected for the district for the 2020 property taxes. The tax roll is an acknowledgement by the board and superintendent regarding the property tax levy.

Lastly, the approval of a waiver to use the Star Renaissance as an alternate seventh grade reading assessment for the 2020-2021 school year will be considered.

The district is required to administer a reading diagnostic to this grade level of students whose performances on the grade six STAAR reading assessment weren't up to par.

However, because of disruptions to the 2019-2020 school year and possible disruptions to the 2020-2021 school year resulting from COVID-19, districts are allowed to request a waiver to use an alternate reading instrument approved by the Trustees for the 2020-2021 school year only.

(The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. in the Central Services Boardroom, 8500 N. Kings Highway.)
