Almost $90K in grants to be given to local nonprofits

TEXARKANA - The Texarkana Area Community Foundation will award more than $76,000 to local nonprofit organizations during its annual grant presentation at 5 p.m. today.

The event will be a drive-through at the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council, 321 W. 4th St.

TACF, an affiliate of the Arkansas Community Foundation, will give out 47 grants for a total of $76,325. In addition, 17 checks totaling $11,850 from the Andrew G. and Sarah S. Goesl Endowment will be presented, for a total of $88,175.

Some of the entities receiving grants include the City of Texarkana, Texas; Domestic Violence Prevention, Inc.; Harvest Regional Food Bank; and Randy Sams' Outreach Center. During the presentations, reasons for why each organization was selected and what each one plans to do with the grant will be shared.

Executive Director Ken Cox said they typically would have a larger in-person event, but circumstances didn't allow for such.

"Normally, we have a reception," he said. "But this year, because of COVID, we're just not able to have that size of a gathering. We were planning to do it using Zoom, but our board is just sick and tired of Zoom. So one of them suggested that we just do a drive-through."

Cox said TACF gives out resources every year to help nonprofits through tough times.

"A lot of people don't realize we're one of the best-kept secrets here in Texarkana," he said. "We give this out every year. About five years ago, we actually gave out over $100,000. That was the first time that had been done by an Arkansas Community Foundation affiliate. So, it's a big deal for us."
