Police putting down razors to raise money

TEXARKANA, ARK. - It's about to get hairy at the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department.

It's almost time for No Shave November and about 22 TAPD officers are tossing their razors and growing beards in an effort to raise money for Shop with a Cop.

Shop with a Cop is a charity event where local police officers and firefighters raise money to provide Christmas for disadvantaged families in the Texarkana area.

Each officer who participates will pay $100, said Sgt.Rick Cockrell, a spokesman for TAPD. That fee sponsors one child. Officers will begin growing their beards on Nov. 1. For $150, an officer receives a head start on growing their beards, Cockrell said.

Texarkana citizens can also sponsor an officer.

"Anything from $5 to $100 is appreciated. Any amount helps because the more we raise, the more children we can help," Cockrell said.

Pawn Express has also issued a challenge to Texarkana residents. They are offering the officer or citizen with the best beard a prize that will be announced at a later date. The officer or citizen with the most sponsors, will also win a prize.

No Shave November is also a morale booster that officers enjoy doing, Cockrell said.

Voting on the best beard will be on the TAPD Facebook page during the last three days of November. The winner will be announced at this year's Shop with a Cop event.
