Texas-side mayor updates local chamber on recycling, events

TEXARKANA - The Texas side of town has a busy fall planned, its mayor told Chamber of Commerce officials on Tuesday via Zoom.

"One key issue we are working on is the Texas-side recycling program," Mayor Bob Bruggeman said. "Right now, we are looking over three solutions. We could end our recycling program. We could limit it to cardboard. Or we could continue the recycling program, with the material transported to Little Rock with a slight increase in fees. Right now, we are looking hard at the last option, and working on negotiating a lower price with Waste Management."

City Manager Shirley Jaster has been signed for another year, with a raise in her contract.

Bark at the Park is going ahead for its fourth year.

"It takes place this Saturday at the dog park area in the north part of Spring Lake Park," Bruggeman said. "Your dogs can get their annual rabies shot, no charge. It takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m."

The Fall season of Movies In The Park kicks off 7 p.m. Thursday at 4303 N. Park Road within Spring Lake Park.

"We are starting off with that Texarkana classic, 'The Town That Dreaded Sundown," he said.

In addition, he announced that several local businesses are starting up or expanding and to look for them soon.

Texarkana Chamber of Commerce officials announced that this year's EDC golf tournament was a success, with greater attendance than last year, as well as a greater amount of money raised.

The Chamber also said its Small Business Expo had greater attendance as compared to last year, with a total of 39 booths housing businesses this year.
