TEXARKANA, Texas - A pair of red athletic shoes helped investigators identify a robbery suspect who was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison as part of a plea agreement in Bowie County.

Daquaveon Burks appeared before 102nd District Judge Jeff Addison via video from the Bowie County jail. With the help of Assistant Public Defender Deborah Moore, Burks entered pleas of guilty to robbery, deadly conduct and unlawful possession of a firearm. Burks also admitted to violating conditions of a 10-year probation he received last year for robbery.

Burks was assessed a 10-year term of probation in October 2019 for a robbery that occurred in August 2019. Burks punched a man in the face and took his money after asking him to change a $100 dollar bill outside of a Texarkana, Texas, residence Aug. 21, 2019.

Burks received a 20-year term for the gunpoint robbery of a man who was approached outside his Texarkana, Texas, apartment complex March 7. The victim reported that he believes he was followed to the apartments by someone driving or riding in a compact car with Arkansas plates.

The victim said he was on the ground and being ordered to hand over his wallet when he noticed the masked man's red Fila athletic shoes. The victim, who manages a store in a Texarkana shopping mall, said he sold the shoes just days before and noted that his store is the only one in town which carries that particular shoe.

Using video surveillance from the mall, investigators were able to identify Burks as the suspect who bought the red shoes from the robbery victim.

Burks was sentenced to four years in prison for several other felonies, including the robbery for which he was serving probation. Those terms were ordered to run concurrently with the 20-year term Burks received for the March 7 robbery.

A deadly conduct charge stems from a shooting March 18. Burks fired shots which went through a window and struck a television in an apartment in the 2000 block of W. 15th Street.

At the time of his arrest March 19, Burks was in possession of a handgun. As a previously convicted felon Burks was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Assistant District Attorney Randle Smolarz represented the state.
