TEXARKANA, Ark. - A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday afternoon in an accident on North State Line Avenue and his passenger is in critical condition.

Both Texarkana, Arkansas, and Texarkana, Texas, police and firefighters, along with LifeNet, responded shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday to an accident involving a motorcycle and vehicle in front of the Sonic Drive-In at State Line Avenue and East 21st Street.

The male driver of the 2008 Suzuki motorcycle died at the scene, said Sgt. Rick Cockrell, a public information officer for the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department. The driver has been identified as Scott Storey, 45, of Texarkana, Arkansas. His passenger, Heidi Fleming Anthony, 43, of Texarkana, Arkansas, was seriously injured and is reportedly in critical condition at a local hospital, Cockrell said late Tuesday.

The motorcycle caught fire on impact and was destroyed.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation but police believe the motorcycle collided with a 2003 GMC Yukon.

"As of right now, they are still trying to work out what happened, but from the looks of things, the positioning of the vehicles, an SUV was southbound on State Line, attempting to turn east into Arkansas, and the motorcycle was going north," Cockrell said.

The driver of the SUV, Michael Pearson, 47, and his passenger Lelon Pearson, 42, were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

Traffic was blocked in both lanes of State Line Avenue.

"It caused some congestion. Traffic was detoured for a couple of blocks," Cockrell said.

Witnesses said Sonic employees helped direct traffic around the accident until first responders arrived.

Several people involved in the local motorcycle community drove to the scene after learning of the accident.

One man said he heard there was a bad accident but did not know who the victim was.

"I will hear soon enough," he said. "Word always spreads fast."
