REDWATER, Texas - Redwater Independent School District Visual Arts Department has been recognized for the Texas Art Education Association District of Distinction award for 2020.

Over 1,000 districts state-wide were eligible to apply for the TAEA Visual Arts Award. Redwater ISD was one of only 42 districts to receive the honor, indicating they are in the top 4% of districts in the state.

The TAEA Administration and Supervision division recognizes districts with outstanding leadership in promoting the arts in their district and community, and awards districts that are actively participating members in TAEA and beyond TAEA sponsored events.

"This is a great honor, and a lot of hard work went into it," said Carrie Slay, an art teacher at Redwater High School. "We worked across the district to ensure we were meeting goals and deadlines. This award is really all about showcasing our student skills and talents, and keeping students involved in the visual art field. I feel like this really instills an appreciation for the arts, and gives our students something to be proud of."

The district also participated in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event, bringing home 20 metals and advancing three students to State.

"It is great to be in a district that allows teachers to show off the students in the visual arts," Slay said. "We have already started work on this year's district of distinction requirements and hope to make this a tradition of excellence at Redwater in the visual arts for years to come."
