POW-MIA vigil won't make; outlook better for local Veterans Day Parade

TEXARKANA - The POW-MIA vigil set for this weekend was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns. But local veterans still have hopes the Veterans Day Parade can muster later this fall.

The Texarkana Area Veterans Council is still planning to hold its annual downtown Veterans Day Parade on what they hope is the heels of the coronavirus crisis.

Greg Beck, who is a member of the council, said Friday evening that the council will meet again, the first Thursday in October, to consider whether to cancel the parade.

This year, with Veterans Day (Nov. 11 ) falling on Wednesday, the parade will likely be held Saturday, Nov.14. Those still seeking to participate in the parade, have until Oct. 1 to fill out application and send it to Texarkana Texas City Hall.

For the first time in 33 years, the Texarkana Area Chapter No. 278 Vietnam Veterans of America cancelled its 33rd Annual POW-MIA Vigil set for this current weekend.

This vigil is usually held at the Vietnam-Korea Memorial near the West Seventh Street and North State Line Avenue. It's conducted to honor and remember those military service members who were, and still are, classified as either Prisoners of War or Missing in Action.
