Crossing guard critical but stable | GoFundMe account set up

TEXARKANA, Texas - A Texarkana Independent School District crossing guard struck by a vehicle early Monday remains in stable but critical condition at a local hospital.

No charges have been filed in the accident, said Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for the Texarkana Texas Police Department. However, investigators believe driver inattention was the primary contributing factor in the crash, Vaughn said.

Ron Ferguson, 68, a crossing guard and security guard for TISD, was directing traffic at 8:20 a.m. on Summerhill Road when the accident occurred.

A 76-year-old man was driving his Ford pickup southbound on Summerhill Road and had moved into the turning lane in preparation of making a left turn into the Summerhill Square parking lot, said Vaughn. Ferguson was struck by the truck.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Ferguson and his family. Both Ferguson and his wife will lose income as a result of the accident.

"Ron will have a long to road to recovery and will face a large decrease in income. The family is asking for help in daily expenses, bills, and medical assistance," a family member wrote on the account.
